Background

Before studying design, Mathieu Gustafsson trained in traditional cabinetmaking: “I wanted to learn the fundamentals—to understand how objects were made in the past, but also how they’re made today.” This curiosity continues to drive him as he enjoys navigating the balance between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary materials and technologies. From his Stockholm studio, founded in 2013, Mathieu works on a variety of projects spanning furniture design and research into new sustainable materials, including a biogenic component made from kraft paper, stronger than wood, and patented under the label Papershell.

Signature Style

Although rooted in his Scandinavian heritage—clean, minimal, and understated—Mathieu tries to infuse it with a layer of originality often drawn from his French background. His process often starts with a specific material or technique that he wants to reinterpret or approach from a fresh perspective. Ultimately, it’s about the desire to question things, challenge conventions, and push himself to reimagine familiar objects.
