The Burnt Wood Sideboard by Materra Matang explores the concept of true “wood stitching,” orchestrating an unexpected dialogue between rope and wooden structure. Composed of a multitude of small elements assembled without nails or screws, it is held together entirely through rope and traditional joinery techniques.
Its charred finish draws inspiration from a Japanese architectural process that naturally strengthens the wood while imparting a singular, expressive character.
Conceived as a small architectural form, this seemingly simple object reveals itself as a genuine artisanal challenge, where skilled craftsmanship alone can harmoniously unite such diverse materials and techniques.
Founded on January 1, 2025, from the merger of the Mobilier national and the Cité de la céramique – Sèvres & Limoges, the Manufactures Nationales unite four centuries of heritage with contemporary creation to champion excellence in French craftsmanship.
